Local Energy Co-op to Begin Using Revenues to Support Green Community Projects

By: Deanna McArthur
After two years of operation, Foothills Energy Co-op is engaging members of Black Diamond and Turner Valley to put its revenues to work in the community.
Foothills Energy Co-op was founded by a diverse group of residents that have pooled their individual strengths to power a unique idea that will help give back to the communities they love so much.
Managed by a local volunteer board, the Co-op markets electricity, natural gas and green energy to the residents of the Foothills area with the express purpose of retaining revenues in and for the community. All revenues that have been generated from the sale of energy have gone into the Co-op Community Fund, which will be used to fund and support projects focused on energy conservation, green energy, and sustainability.
To begin the process of putting the Community Fund to work, Foothills Energy Co-op has organized its first Meet Up for existing Co-op members and any non-members interested in the project.
“With so many interesting ideas of conservation and sustainability - such as solar panels, energy efficiency, naturalist clubs, and walking trails - we want members to know how they can start turning these ideas into reality,” said Graham Lettner, founding board member of Foothills Energy Co-op. “This is a chance for community-minded people to meet up for a drink and discuss these ideas, and the first drink is on us!”
Where: The Westwood, 115 Government Road, Black Diamond
Who: The Meet-Up is open to all Co-op members, and any non-members who are interested in joining.
“This is such a great way of giving back to the people who make our communities such great places to live,” said Lettner. “We have seen great growth since our launch in 2016, and the more people who choose to shop locally for their energy and join the Co-op, the more projects we can support.”
