To Sell or Not to Sell

By: Nick Clark

Madeline Low founded our company in 1978, 47 years ago. Today, it is one of Alberta’s oldest and still privately owned utility energy companies.

As a grassroots and local software company, our first customer was Imperial Oil (and is still a client today). We have had over four decades of continued growth. The UTILITYnet group of companies has reached the magic mark of $100 million in annual sales with over 60,000 electricity, natural gas, Internet, and Industrial accounts managed through the energy management systems and retail services provided to customers in Alberta, BC, and Saskatchewan.

We have survived the ever-changing landscape of Alberta’s regulatory framework and deregulation of our energy market driven by the ideologies of Lougheed, Getty, Klein, Stelmach, Redford, Hancock, Prentice, Notley, and Kenney. Today, we’re dealing with another (well-needed) round of restructuring of the electricity market by our premier, Danielle Smith.

Madeline is now in her 70s, and I will turn 80 in a few months. We are often asked when we will retire and sell the company.

Here is the path we have chosen. Click here to read more.
